The information below guides you through the full rebuild of the 2019 Shapeshifter for Canyon.
Only clamp the Shapeshifter eyelet in the indicated area. Never clamp the clevis in your vise as it may be damaged.
WARNING: FOX products should be serviced by a trained bicycle service technician, in accordance with FOX specifications. If you have any doubt whether or not you can properly service your FOX product, then DO NOT attempt it. Improperly serviced products can fail, causing the rider to lose control resulting in SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
WARNING: FOX products contain pressurized nitrogen, air, oil, or all 3. Never disassemble any portion of a pressurized product. DO NOT puncture, incinerate or crush any portion of a FOX product. DO NOT attempt to disassemble any portion of a FOX product, unless expressly instructed to do so by the applicable FOX technical documentation, and then ONLY while strictly adhering to all FOX instructions and warnings in that instance. Misuse can cause property damage, SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
WARNING: Modification, improper service, or use of aftermarket replacement parts with FOX forks and shocks may cause the product to malfunction, resulting in SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. DO NOT modify any part of a fork or shock, including the fork brace (lower leg cross brace), crown, steerer, upper and lower leg tubes, or internal parts, except as instructed herein. Any unauthorized modification may void the warranty, and may cause failure or the fork or shock, resulting in SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
Step 1
Remove the black air cap and release all air pressure from the main air chamber by depressing the Schrader Valve.
WARNING: Please verify that all air has been released from the air chamber by pushing down on the Schrader valve core. Failure to release all air pressure before further disassembly may cause parts to eject causing SEVERE INJURY OR DEATH.
Step 2
Remove the Schrader air valve by turning it counter-clockwise with a 3/16in hex wrench. Replace the air valve o-ring with a new greased one from the rebuild kit.
Step 3
Gently clamp the Shapeshifter eyelet in your soft-jawed vise. Use a 6mm hex wrench to prevent the middle body from turning while you carefully turn the clevis counter-clockwise. Make sure not to scratch or damage the middle body while unthreading the clevis. The video below shows the removal of the Clevis.
Note: Do not clamp the flats of the Outer Body too tightly as you can deform the seal gland for the Wiper seal. Clamp the Outer Body flats with your Knipex pliers just tightly enough to allow you to unthread it.
Step 4
Reposition the Shapeshifter in your soft-jawed vise as shown. Unthread the outer body from the eyelet assembly by turning it counter-clockwise. You may use the flats on the end of the outer body if it is too tight to turn by hand. Separate the outer body with middle body from the eyelet assembly over a waste oil basin.
Step 5
Separate the middle body from the outer body by pushing the middle body out through the large end of the outer body.
Step 6
Reposition the eyelet assembly in your soft-jawed vise, then unthread the inner body counter-clockwise with a 6mm hex wrench. Pull out the inner body and set it aside.
Step 7
Unthread the bleed screw counter-cloclwise from the top of the eyelet assembly with a 2mm hex wrench. Replace the bleed screw o-ring with a new greased one from the kit, then set aside.
Step 9
Unthread and remove the set screw found under the Delrin ball by turning it counter-clockwise with your 2mm hex wrench.
Step 10
Remove the eyelet assembly from your soft-jawed vise then invert to allow the 0.125" ball bearing to drop out.
Step 11
Push the IFP out through the open end of the inner body to separate them. You may use a tool through the 6mm hex opening to push the IFP.
Step 12
Use a plastic seal pick to replace both the inner and outer IFP seals with new greased ones from the kit. Make sure that the Q-ring on the outside of the IFP is not twisted.
Step 13
Use a plastic seal pick to replace the Q-ring and back-ups rings on the outside of the inner body with new greased ones from the kit. Replace the o-ring face seal on the end of the inner body with a new ungreased one from the kit. Do not grease the face seal o-ring.
Step 14
Replace the o-ring on the outside of the eyelet assembly with a new greased one from the kit.
Step 15
Use a plastic seal pick to replace the glide band and the o-ring under the glide band on the middle body with new greased ones from the kit.
Do not attempt to remove and replace the pressure relief screw, shim, and ball in the middle body. The ball is seated with a precision peening operation and may leak or blow off at too low of a pressure if replaced.
Note: If the Shapeshifter does not stay compressed during normal operation, please replace the Middle Body Assembly in its entirety.
Step 17
Remove the wiper seal from the end of the outer body then clean the outer body thoroughly with Isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free paper towel.
Step 18
Coat the outside of the new wiper from the kit with a thick film of Slick Honey. Install the wiper by pressing it in with your thumbs. Make sure that the wiper is fully pressed in or the retaining ring may not fully seat.
Step 19
Reinstall the washer followed by the retaining ring. Make sure that the washer and retaining ring are concentric and that the retaining ring is fully seated.
Step 21
Check that the Q-ring on the outside of the IFP is not twisted then coat the outside of the IFP with a thick film of Slick Honey. Install the IFP into the inner body.
Step 22
Install the inner body with IFP into the eyelet assembly. Take care not to damage the IFP as you install it over the shaft within the eyelet assembly. Thread the inner body clockwise into the eyelet assembly tightening to 90 in-lb (10.2 Nm) torque.
Step 24
Reinstall the outer body onto the eyelet assembly tightening clockwise to 110 in-lb (12.4 Nm) torque.
Step 25
Reinstall the clevis by threading it clockwise onto the exposed threads of the middle body by hand. Hold the clevis from spinning while you tighten the middle body counter-clockwise with your 6mm hex wrench to 144 in-lb (16.3 Nm) torque.
Step 26
Install the Shapeshifter IFP depth setting tool (PN: 398-00-791) into the top of the eyelet assembly. Thread the tool in clockwise until it is hand tight.
Step 27
Verify that the o-ring is in place on the Fill Machine Adapter (PN: 803-00-463). Install the Fill Machine Adapter into the port on the eyelet assembly. Your fill machine should be setup with FOX 10wt. Green oil for the Shapeshifter.
Step 29
Begin to vacuum the Shapeshifter. Actuate the Shapeshifter control 2-3 times while vacuuming by pressing and releasing the silver shaft coming out of the eyelet. The Shapeshifter control actuation is shown in this step by pressing the silver shaft against a hard surface.
Step 30
Switch your machine from vacuum to fill. Cycle the Shapeshifter through its travel 2-3 times while filling.
Step 31
Stop the fill cycle but leave the Shapeshifter attached to the machine. Reinstall the air valve assembly. Tighten clockwise to 22 in-lb (2.5 Nm) with a 3/16in hex wrench.
Step 32
Add 25psi to the main air chamber with your shock pump. This will set the IFP in the correct position and purge excess oil.
Step 33
Release the air from the main air chamber before disconnecting the Shapeshifter from the fill machine.
Step 34
Top off the fill port with FOX 10wt. Green then reinstall the bleed screw with a 2mm hex wrench tightening clockwise to 7 in-lb (0.8 Nm) torque.
Step 35
Remove the IFP tool then reinstall the 0.125" ball bearing. Reinstall the set screw with your 2mm hex wrench, tightening clockwise to 7 in-lb (0.8 Nm) torque.
