The procedure below guides you through the rebuild of the Race Face Chester pedal. The service procedure is identical for both the small and large versions of the Chester pedal, with the only difference being the length of the end cap. Both versions of the end caps are supplied in the rebuild kits, so make sure to use the appropriate one that matches what you remove from the pedal in step 2.
WARNING: Race Face products should be serviced by a qualified bicycle service technician, in accordance with Race Face specifications. If you have any doubt whether or not you can properly service your Race Face product, then DO NOT attempt it. Improperly serviced products can fail, causing the rider to lose control resulting in SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
Step 1
Identify the Left from Right pedals as certain steps in the rebuild require different threading for Left and Right pedals. The left pedal can be identified by an additional groove on the spindle near the threads. The pedal body also has a molded-in feature that identifies the Left from Right.
NOTE: Most pedal service can be done by hand. If needed, carefully clamp the pedals in your soft-jawed vise taking care not to bend or damage any of the pedal pins. A shop rag may be used to prevent damage to the pedal body or pins. Do not over-clamp!
Step 2
Unthread both pedal end caps by turning them counter-clockwise with an 8mm hex wrench. Remove the end caps.
Step 3
Note the length of the end cap that you have removed. Make sure to later install the new end caps from the kit that match the originals removed in step 2. The end cap for Large pedals in pictured on the left while the end cap for small pedals is picutered on the right.
Step 4
Insert an 8mm hex wrench in the end of the spindle and an 8mm deep socket in through the end cap opening.
For Left Pedals: Hold the 8mm hex wrench while you turn the 8mm socket counter-clockwise to remove the internal nut. This nut has a standard thread and is removed by turning counter-clockwise (shown).
For Right Pedals: Hold the 8mm hex wrench while you turn the 8mm socket clockwise to remove the internal nut. This nut has a reverse thread and is removed by turning clockwise (not shown).
Step 5
Remove the nut from within the pedal body. Make sure to keep the nuts from the left and right pedals separated for reinstallation into the correct pedal. The silver nut is used in the RIGHT pedal while the black nut is used in the LEFT pedal.
Step 7
Replace the seals on the pedal spindles with new ones from the kit. Make sure to orient the small arrow on the seal toward the pedal body.
Step 8
Remove the bearing from within the pedal body by inserting your 8mm hex wrench in through the bushing at the spindle end. Push the bearings out of the pedals.
Step 9
Remove the bushing from within the pedal body by inserting a blunt-ended hex wrench or similar tool in through the bearing end of the pedal. With the tool against the bushing and angled toward the outside of the spindle bore, push the bushing out of the pedal body.
Step 10
Install the new bushing from the kit so the end with the chamfer is inserted first into the spindle end of the pedal body. Use your 8mm socket or similar tool to press the new bushing in until it bottoms out.
Step 11
Install the new bearing from the kit into the opposite side of the pedal body. Use your 8mm socket or similar tool to press the bearing in until it bottoms out.
Step 12
Identify the Left from Right pedal bodies and spindles. The left pedal can be identified by an additional groove on the spindle near the threads. The pedal body also has a molded-in feature that identifies the Left from Right.
Apply a thick layer of Park Tool Polylube 1000 or appropriate equivalent grease to the entire surface of the pedal axle as shown. Insert the spindle into the pedal body.
Step 13
Identify the correct nut for each pedal. The silver nut is used in the RIGHT pedal while the black nut is used in the LEFT pedal.
Insert the nut into your 8mm socket then use the socket to position the nut onto the spindle threads within the pedal body.
For Left Pedals: Hold the 8mm socket while you turn the axle clockwise to thread the nut onto the spindle.
For Right Pedals: Hold the 8mm socket while you turn the axle counter-clockwise to thread the nut onto the spindle.
Step 14
Insert your 8mm hex wrench in the end of the spindle and your 8mm deep socket in through the end cap opening.
For Left Pedals: Hold the 8mm hex wrench while you tighten the 8mm socket clockwise to ~55 in-lb (6-7 Nm) torque (shown).
For Right Pedals: Hold the 8mm hex wrench while you tighten the 8mm socket counter-clockwise to ~55 in-lb (6-7 Nm) torque (not shown).
Step 15
Select the appropriate end cap from the kit for the size of pedal you are working on. The end cap for Large pedals in pictured on the left while the end cap for small pedals is picutered on the right.
Install the new end cap by turning it clockwise into the pedal body. Tighten to ~15 in-lb (1.5-3 Nm) torque.
